Abstract
Terence Dickinson joined the RASC in 1958, at the dawn of the space age. It was a time when amateur astronomy was just beginning to gain momentum as a popular recreational activity. In this highly illustrated presentation, Mr. Dickinson offers a personal perspective on the important developments and highlights of amateur astronomy over the subsequent 50 years and evaluates the changing trends in equipment and activities over that period.

As editor of three different popular astronomy magazines, and author of 15 astronomy books with total sales of more than one million copies, Terence Dickinson has been professionally involved in writing, broadcasting and teaching astronomy since 1967 when he joined the staff of the McLaughin Planetarium in Toronto. He is currently editor of SkyNews, Canada's popular-level astronomy magazine. In 1965, he was appointed a member of the Order of Canada for his work in popularizing astronomy in Canada and around the world. Asteroid 5272 Dickinson is named after him.
